The San Francisco Bay Area is the birthplace of digital media, yet locally focused news organizations in the region and in Northern Calfornia struggle to remain visible and economically viable amid overwhelming competition from platform corporations such as Google and Facebook.
In response, local news organizations in our region are participating in an R&D process aimed at forming a shared-services cooperative — the Northern California Media Co-op.
Participants are mostly commercial outlets, but are not limited to that.
If you are affiliated with an independent newsroom in the Bay Area and Northern California and would like to get your organization involved, please fill out this form.

NorCal Media Co-op organizing activities are being conducted by JGKSF Consulting, San Francisco City College Department of Journalism, Watershed Media Project, and by founding NorCal Media Co-op members, with advice and support from the U.S. Federation of Worker Co-ops.
The NorCal Media Co-op is a fiscally sponsored project of Accíon Latina. Business planning for NorCalMedia is made possible by a generous grant from Renaissance Journalism.
